METALLICA, VAN HALEN Nominated In 'Music Game' Category At GOLDEN JOYSTICK AWARDS

According to Glasswerk.co.uk, METALLICA was nominated in the "Music Game Of The Year" category in the world's biggest video games awards event, the Golden Joystick Awards. The band's "Guitar Hero: Metallica" title will face stiff competition from the hugely popular "The Beatles: Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero: Van Halen".

All three bands released their games in the past 12 months and are nominated alongside seven other blockbuster console based music games.

The full list of nominations in the "Music Game Of The Year" category for the 2010 Golden Joystick Awards:

* Guitar Hero on Tour: Modern Hits
* Guitar Hero 5
* The Beatles: Rock Band
* Guitar Hero Greatest Hits
* Band Hero
* Guitar Hero: Van Halen
* Just Dance
* Lego Rock Band

The categories in the Golden Joystick Awards are voted for by the only people who matter – the gamers themselves. Known as the "people's gaming awards" it is also held in high esteem in the global video games industry, with nearly 1,000 executives attending the glittering ceremony, which will this year be held at London, England's Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel on October 29, 2010.

According to The Pulse of Radio, Guitar Hero: Metallica had sold 1.5 million copies as of early April, while the VAN HALEN edition hadn't even reached 250,000 copies sold, although that has only been out since early December.

METALLICA's James Hetfield told The Pulse of Radio last year why his band decided to embrace the video game format. "A lot of kids that maybe wanted to play guitar, or even, especially adults that wanted to play guitar and never did, they're getting a chance to somewhat live a little bit of that in their living room or whatever it is," he said. "And it's a good way to get your music out there. With all the big record stores closing up, getting music to people, it's getting a little limiting. But there are many places, new places to explore, and one of them is Guitar Hero."

Hetfield may have been too optimistic about video games being the new way to get music to people. Other titles, like Guitar Hero V, DJ Hero, and Lego Rock Band have all more or less bombed.

Industry analyst Michael Pachter told The Wrap, "The issue with music games was how fast they grew. They penetrated the installed base so fast that their growth was unsustainable."
